This thematic issue aims to bring together contributions reflecting on research regarding “artistic learning”, both in France and abroad, as well as to provide input for didactic research in this field. More specifically, this dossier aims to publicise studies on the prospects of institutionalising theatrical practices as part of language training in secondary and higher education in France and elsewhere, in particular, on the basis of the very encouraging results from research in education. The first part of this dossier contains three contributions dealing with fundamental theoretical aspects of language learning through artistic approaches: the link between language artistic learning and the didactics of literature, the constraints and pitfalls of evaluating theatrical practices in languages, and an analysis of the repertoire performed by educational theatre in FLE (French as a Foreign Language) learning. The second part includes four field studies which aim to take a closer look at classroom practices without, however, neglecting theoretical considerations. In addition to a shared interest regarding the distinctive features, the attempts of institutionalisation, and the means of evaluating artistic practices for language learning, this dossier provided by Lidil is characterised by a broadly shared theoretical basis which reinforces its coherence and unity.
